Senior Technical Writer
The Senior Technical Writer develops and maintains product documentation--installation guides, user documentation, troubleshooting guides, online help, product release documentation and training materials--for software applications across the enterprise. The successful applicant must have the ability to critically analyze how users will interact with the software and turn those thoughts into detailed documents and tutorials.
Other responsibilities include organizing and maintaining a project library, as well as developing and maintaining a document control storage center to include documentation, technical articles, best practices and template lists of EHR content.
In terms of collaboration, the Senior Technical Writer interacts with a diverse cast of interested parties, including programmers, product management, business analysts, product implementation, and customer support to gain an understanding of the product or system under development and determine the appropriate type of documentation needed.
As with many creative and writing/editing positions, the Senior Technical Writer must meet deadlines and produce high quality work in accordance with an in-house style guide.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze and interpret highly specialized technical information to compose detailed documentation and technical manuals
- Plan, coordinate and create clear, concise documentation with only high-level project direction
- Create and maintain software product documentation, which may include installation guides, user and administrator guides, training and troubleshooting guides, programming guides, online help, and other technical publications such as release notes
- Review documentation for an entire project to verify validity, accuracy, completeness of content, logic and clarity of expression, and rewrite phrases without changing original meaning
- Participate in formal reviews of deliverable documents, and ensure documents meet editorial and product specifications as required
- Organize and maintain a project library that includes all documentation, technical articles, best practices and template lists regarding EHR content
- Collaborate with team members to meet client quality and schedule goals
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and under tight deadlines
- Work in an Iterative (Agile/Scrum) Development Methodology
- Ensure effective product knowledge transition to support and other teams
- Other duties as assigned
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English or technical communication, or equivalent experience
- Excellent command of the English language
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Understanding of structured writing techniques
- Demonstrated advanced technical writing capability with at least 5 years of experience working with software-based solutions and technical writing
- Experience with enterprise software documentation
- Demonstrated knowledge of software development lifecycle and product guides
- Knowledge of information gathering techniques, procedures and practices
- Experience preparing, reviewing, editing, certifying and controlling technical documents
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Project management skills; ability to manage complex projects under tight deadlines
- Attentive to detail, quality-focused, flexible and deadline-oriented
- Strong work ethic and drive for high-quality results
- Exceptional organization and program management skills
- Fully proficient with suite of tools (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Acrobat Professional and help-generation tools)
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize workload, and adhere to budgets
- Healthcare IT background and Agile development experience a plus
