Open source health IT leader lends VistA expertise to HP Open Community Team, which is donating competition winnings to veteran-oriented charities
CARLSBAD, CA—Medsphere Systems Corporation, the leading provider of open source electronic health record (EHR) solutions and services derived from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) VistA EHR, today announced that the HP Open Community Team, to which Medsphere is a contributor, is one of three award winners in the VA Medical Appointment Scheduling Contest. As a result, the HP Open Community Team won the third place prize, enabling the community to donate $495,000 to charitable organizations providing support for veterans and their families.
Making good on a commitment to open development, VA initiated the Scheduling Contest earlier this year in an effort to replace the existing Medical Scheduling Package (MSP) with a modern scheduling tool. The primary goals for VA were to engage the private sector in developing a solution that enables veterans to more efficiently make appointments for inpatient and outpatient care.
The HP team not only met the specific contest requirements, but it also focused resources to anticipate the VA’s longer-term needs and challenges.
“First of all, we’d like to congratulate VA for the trust and commitment they demonstrated by initiating this open development contest,” said Richard Sullivan, head of Medsphere’s Government Services Division. “This is a very exciting and significant event because it demonstrates the benefits of community collaboration, namely rapid, affordable, high-quality development. Medsphere would also like to thank HP for their leadership of this effort. We look forward to continued success in future projects.”
