  • Interfaces & Technical Solutions Group Capabilities and Qualifications

Medsphere’s Interfaces & Technical Solutions Group (ITSG) offers a comprehensive suite of interfaces based on industry Health Level 7 (HL7.org) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. The ITSG is staffed with senior level expertise in both analysis and programming, offering a full service, turnkey delivery model for interface development. With extensive expertise in legacy VistA and Vista-derived components and the technologies used to modernize these components, ITSG offers superior integration of open source and commercial software with VistA, RPMS and OpenVista.

Medsphere’s suite of interfaces includes, but is not limited to, functions related to admit, discharge and transfer (ADT), charges, images, ADM machines and lab instruments. Medsphere’s ITSG leverages expertise and knowledge of the Mirth Connect Engine while working with each customer’s technical team to
deliver, test, deploy, and support standard interfaces:

ADT Inbound Interface enables OpenVista to receive ADT information from external sources, such as Patient Information Management Systems.

Radiology Image View/Link Interface (from PACS to the Clinical Documentation Module) stores in OpenVista hyperlinks to images from an external Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS).

Document Image Inbound Interface (to Clinical Documentation) connects external scanning applications and equipment with the Medsphere Clinical Documentation Module. This interface allows OpenVista to capture and store electronic documents and images, including TIF, PNG, JPG, BMP, and PDF files, in the patient’s electronic health record.

Automated Dispensing Machine (ADM) Interface supports use of ADMs, such as Pyxis or Omnicell machines, that are widely used in patient care settings. Medication orders are sent to the ADM and the ADM returns charge messages. If using the Pharmacy Pricing Engine, the price is calculated and sent to the hospital financial system.

Charge Interface provides a mechanism for adding to the patient’s bill the cost of laboratory tests, pharmacy drugs, radiology exams, and supply items used for a procedure. A charge message can be generated for any item that can be ordered, accessioned, or dispensed within OpenVista for the care of the patient.

Each system can generate a charge that looks up the charge code of the item and creates a separate charge record for each item. The charge trigger event is user defined. For example, on laboratory orders you can charge on order, accession or result.

Data Innovations for Lab Instruments and Reference Lab Interfaces offers a clinical laboratory middleware solution that interfaces to medical instruments, such as laboratory analyzers, automation equipment, and point-of-care devices. Data Innovations can be utilized in many different ways:

  • As a consolidating front-end to a larger information system, separating the host from real-time demand and standardizing protocols;
  • As a value enhancer between instrumentation and an information system, filling those important gaps in functionality between the two; and
  • As a stand-alone, small information system.
  • Custom Interface Development and Design With expertise in analysis, design and programming of interface
  • solutions, the ITSG group is capable of offering interface solutions with any HL7 compliant third-party system.
