Medsphere Systems Corporation Acquires CIAi
Acquisition Unites Market-Leading VistA-based Electronic Health Record (EHR) companies; Expands Medsphere Product and Service Offerings
ALISO VIEJO, California, Jan. 9, 2006 - Medsphere Systems Corporation, the leading commercial provider of Open Source information technology for the healthcare industry, today announced the acquisition of Clinical Informatics Associates Incorporated (CIAi). Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, CIAi is a provider of modular VistA®-based EHR software solutions to its established base of customers within the ambulatory and acute care markets.
The acquisition reflects Medsphere's ongoing strategy to leverage Open Source technology and the proven performance of the VistA Electronic Health Record (EHR) within the healthcare IT market. The newly acquired technology strengthens and complements Medsphere's OpenVista Clinic™ and OpenVista Enterprise™ products and will further enable Medsphere to deliver the broadest range of VistA-based EHR solutions to healthcare organizations.
"Medsphere is focused on using the proven VistA EHR platform to improve the quality of healthcare," said Kenneth W. Kizer, MD MPH, Medsphere's CEO. "The acquisition of CIAi enhances our technology portfolio, expands our product suite, and enables us to substantially broaden our service capabilities."
CIAi's products include the robust VueCentric® framework which enables healthcare providers to have seamless access to patient information. VueCentric encompasses all of the functionality of the VA's computerized patient record system and also provides additional features for healthcare providers including patient education, womens health, document imaging, and a new ePrescribing component that eliminates indecipherable hand-written prescriptions.
VueCentric is currently implemented at over 30 healthcare sites across the United States and has been selected by the Indian Health Service (IHS) for system-wide deployment within its health program. IHS is scheduled to deploy VueCentric at an additional 20 sites this year.
"CIAi's acquisition by Medsphere is a huge step forward for us in furthering our shared vision of leveraging VistA-based technology to improve the safety, efficiency, and quality of healthcare delivery," said CIAi co-founder Doug Martin, MD. "We look forward to continuing to provide the highest quality of products and service to our current and future customers while accelerating our development cycle."
Medsphere builds on proven VistA technology, to create commercially viable, cost-effective, open- source EHR products for hospitals, clinics and integrated delivery networks and to provide the required deployment, training and support services for successful adoption. The company's OpenVista Enterprise product is currently being deployed at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland Texas. In addition, Medsphere has recently announced an agreement to deploy OpenVista Clinic at the Community Health Network of West Virginia (CHNWV).
