Transforming healthcare through open source

Healthcare lags far behind other industries in adopting comprehensive IT tools to facilitate greater efficiency and improve vital functions. Despite more than sufficient evidence that clinical IT systems help improve care, save lives, reduce costs and increase revenue, only a small percentage of healthcare organizations use advanced clinical systems and electronic health records. The obvious question is why not. In "Transforming Healthcare Through Open Source," Billings posits that much of the fault lies with the prevalent proprietary software business model, which fails to adequately serve most healthcare providers. Acceptance of the open-source business model across other industries—and the proliferation of such open-source companies as Linux, Red Hat and more—offers healthcare a road map to use in transforming care.

Mental Health and OpenVista

OpenVista provides integrated support for mental healthcare

A natively integrated EHR solution, OpenVista features a number of core applications that help psychiatric and behavioral health facilities improve clinician communication, thereby optimizing safety and quality. These include:

  • A computerized provider order entry (CPOE) module and associated alerts
  • A closed loop medication management process for both inpatient and outpatient episodes of care
  • Clinical alerts and reminders
  • Robust charting templates and tools that facilitate best practices and complete documentation
  • Order management and results reporting functionalities that provide faster turnaround times and increase access, at the point of care, to vital exam and test results, e.g., toxicology lab results and abnormal or critical values

OpenVista also enhances third-party reimbursement by providing ready access to clinical information (individual encounter notes, progress and discharge notes, outcome measurements, case management information, etc.), comprehensive assessments, treatment plans, suicide incident reports and documentation of administrative activities.
